The Angst Farmers Rock Once More

I finally secured my own Rock Band set! I also spent a fruitless search driving around town looking for a cheap mic stand and a drum throne. I guess those will show up later.

I’ve gotten stuck in the vocalist solo tour. I ran up against a set list with only one song I know. So now I need to listen to Fall Out Boy, KISS, The Killers and one other band over and over until I learn the lyrics.

The Big Lebowski

The Coens have been on my mind since I saw No Country for Old Men. There were a bunch of clips from the Big Lebowski during the pre-show and I thought I should revisit it. I think I was a bit more into it this time around.

Interworld

Although the cover says the book was written by Neil Gaiman and Micheal Reaves, I will be filing this one under “R”.

Psychonauts

Tim Schafer’s best work to date. Absolutely stunning world design and top shelf writing. I’m nearing the end of the game, sad to think it will be over soon.

Veronica Mars

Working my way through the first season of Veronica Mars. Expertly written and acted, the show is full of stories that let you think you know what’s going on before throwing convention out the window.

9 Lives

As part of my SELP project, I am immersing myself in films relating to women’s issues, created by women filmmakers or having to do with single mothers. To date, I’ve watched the Vagina Monologues, Thirteen and 9 Lives.

9 Lives is a series of 9 loosely connected vignettes about various women. Each vignette is a single, uninterrupted take. Each woman in the film was complex and multi-layered and yet they were just a facet of all women, a different face for a different day.

The men in the film seemed brutish and awkward by comparison, even the most gallant failing to share a plane of equality with any of the female characters.

I was pleased to see Holly Hunter again, nuanced and wonderful. If you need to be reminded of Robin Wright Penn’s acting caliber, this is the film to check out.

The final story, a simple tale of mother and daughter, enacted by Glen Close and Dakota Fanning, cut me to the core. I thought I was observing a simple slice of life, but the reveal, accomplished with the simple rotation of the camera showed me the truth.

Return of the Top Ten Lists

This may or may not be a short-lived experiment, but, in order to account for how I’m spending my time, I may begin to keep track of movies, books and various other entertainment.

Free Books

For today’s activity, I established a small collection of books to give away/push off on friends who visit. These include some science fiction novels, graphic design books, graphic novels, books on writing and etcetera, etcetera.

So, if you come over, please peruse the books and take something.

Visiting Burque

Last week my company graciously flew my back to Albuquerque to participate in the company Christmas party. I decided to stay a whole week so I would have time to visit my friends. Continue reading →

For Those of You About to Rock

Nukes and I played Rock Band pretty much all day long. It is officially the best game ever. The drums are the hardest instrument because you’re actually playing drums as opposed to pretending to strum a guitar. I need a lot more practice if our band, The United Hobolition, is to make it to the top. I found the bass guitar very satisfying and backed Nukes up with some groovy strumming. The customization features are insane, a mini game to get lost in. I must have this game.

Oh yes, it will be mine.
